Roblox changed the account experience for younger players in 2026 by rolling out Roblox Kids and Roblox Select globally. The goal is to match game access, chat and parental controls more closely to a user's age rather than treating every under-18 account the same way.

According to Roblox, Kids accounts are aimed at younger children and Select accounts cover older children and younger teens. The exact ages and features can vary by region, but the company says games available to users under 16 receive additional reviews and that chat access now depends on age checks.

The biggest change is that account type affects more than chat

Roblox says all published games go through moderation and receive a content maturity rating. Games that appear in Kids or Select catalogs go through additional evaluation. The company also applies extra publishing requirements to developers who want their games available to younger users.

That means age-based access is connected to discovery itself. A younger account may see a different available catalog than an age-checked user who is 16 or older.

Chat now has a stronger age-check requirement

Roblox says users who have not completed an age check cannot use chat, regardless of the age they entered themselves. For age-checked younger users, standard chat access increases gradually and parents can adjust some settings. Kids accounts have the strictest defaults.

For families, that makes account setup more important. A parent who links their own account can use parental controls for things such as chat settings, specific game access, screen time and spending, with the amount of control changing as the child gets older.

A useful checklist for parents

  • Make sure the child's age information is accurate and understand whether an age check has been completed.
  • Review the account type and content maturity settings instead of assuming the default fits every family.
  • Look at friend, chat and Trusted Friend settings together with the child.
  • Use screen-time and spending controls where they are appropriate.
  • Treat platform controls as one layer, not a substitute for talking about scams, strangers and oversharing.

Roblox also says social media links are restricted for younger accounts, and that users can chat only with similar age groups or Trusted Friends where the feature is available. Text filtering and other moderation systems remain in place.

What this means for gaming sites outside Roblox

The broader lesson is that younger-player safety cannot be reduced to a single content label. Account permissions, communication tools, reporting, moderation and parent visibility all matter. Sites with social features should be clear about who can access private communication and should avoid giving staff unnecessary access to user conversations.

RoPlays is independent from Roblox, so Roblox account settings do not carry over here. When we discuss Roblox safety changes, the purpose is to explain the platform news accurately and link readers back to the original source.
