Roblox changed some familiar social language in 2026: Connections became Friends again, while Trusted Connections became Trusted Friends. The name change is easy to understand, but the more important part is how Roblox is using the Trusted Friends label to distinguish people a user already knows from ordinary in-platform contacts.

What Trusted Friends is meant to do

Roblox says age-checked users 13 and older can add people they know as Trusted Friends through methods such as a live QR scan or imported contacts, with availability depending on country. The company also announced expanded ways for family members and younger friends to connect across age groups, with parental approval required in relevant under-13 cases.

The idea is to let a parent and child, siblings, cousins, or real-world friends play and communicate without treating them exactly like unknown users who happen to meet in a game.

Age checks still sit in the middle

Trusted Friends is not a switch that removes the platform's age rules. Roblox says chat access requires an age check. For younger users, parental controls remain important, and chat is off by default for users younger than nine unless a parent changes the relevant setting where available.

Roblox also says communication continues to be filtered and monitored under its safety standards. That means "trusted" describes the relationship, not a private unmoderated channel.

Why this matters for actual play sessions

Social features are useful when they reduce coordination. A group that already knows each other wants to find the same game, know who is online, and start playing. Family-oriented controls have a different job: they give adults a way to stay involved without requiring them to hover over every session.

Roblox says linked parents can manage areas such as screen time, spending, friends, game access, and chat depending on the child's age and region. Its 2026 Family Zone project goes a step further by giving parents and children an interactive place to learn platform controls together.

What players should check

  • Make sure the account age information and age check are handled correctly.
  • For younger users, link the parent account before a social feature is urgently needed.
  • Review chat and game-access settings together instead of assuming defaults match every family.
  • Remember that availability and exact settings can vary by region and age.
